MLB Talks and Rumors of the Day: Lowe, Sheets, Peavy, Griffey

Published by thetradersarena at 12:47 pm under MLB Talks Edit This

Here is the current MLB Talks and Rumors:

  • Buster Olney reports that the Braves were very close to landing Jake Peavy back in November. They may want to revisit that deal, especially since the new ownership may be looming and not want to deal Peavy. They could ideally sign Orlando Cabrera to play short stop, and then package away Yunel Escobar in a deal instead of top prospects Jason Heyward, Freddie Freeman, or Tommy Hanson.
  • Derek Lowe may not get that 16MM deal he is looking for. He missed out after the Yanks signed Burnett for 82 MM as they wanted to be a big spender and found their pitcher. The Mets do not need to meet his demands as their are other good FA options available in Randy Wolf and Jon Garland.
  • Teams are scared from Ben Sheets and his medical records, but teams still are interested. I would expect a deal with a nice insurance policy in there.
  • Olney, purely speculating, states he thinks Jason Giambi will sign with the A’s, and Pat Burrell with the Rays.
  • Ken Griffey Jr. is being targeted by 5 teams, including the Mariners and Rays, as well as 2 NL teams. He would best be fitted as a DH however, especailly after an undisclosed knee injury suffered as a Red.
  • Andruw Jones contract was reworked, however the Reds and Mets are now not interested in a trade. This means the Dodgers may just release Jones.
  • The Giants want to wait on the outfield market (Abreu, Dunn, Burrel) before offering a deal to Manny Ramirez.
