Evening MLB Updates: Pavano, Scioscia, Manny, Yankees
Here is some new news this evening:
- Carl Pavano has signed a 1 year deal with the Indians. He will 1.5 million gauranteed dollars with up to 5.3 million in incentives. Pavano has battled injuries since he signed a deal with the Yankees a few years ago.
- Mike Scioscia received an extension from the Angels recently, believed to be up until 2012, however, it is now known that the deal is till 2018. Scioscia started coaching the Angels in 2000, meaning that would take him to his 18th year with the club. He brought the Angels their first 100 win year last year.
- Brian Sabean talked today about Manny: “In our case I’m not sure yet. We’re monitoring the situation. We’ve had talks. We have not made an offer. We’ve talked in parameters of what would be yearwise. It would have to be a perfect fit dollarwise and more so what we’re doing to try and build this thing going forward on a younger basis. It’s actually not what we’re looking for, except that he’s such a profound middle of the order hitter. Which we need.” Prior to this, there was a report that the Giants were now not interested at all in the free agent outfielder.
- The Yankees have signed Jason Johnson to compete for the 5th starters role. They also designated Shelly Duncan for assignment.
- The Orioles have gotten their first Japanese player in the form of Koji Uehara. Uehara is 34, and was ranked 22 on Keith Laws’ free agent list. They are still looking at Kenshin Kawakami.
- The Phillies have signed Marcus Giles to back up Chase Utley for 600 K. The Tigers signed Alexis Gomez for 450 K, and the Yankees signed Josh Rodriguez for 450 K.
