MLB Updates & Rumors: Peavy, Hoffman, Pudge, Manny, +

Published by thetradersarena at 12:34 pm under MLB Talks Edit This

Here is the latest updates and rumors around the mill:

  •  The Dodgers have offered free agent closer Trevor Hoffman a deal worth over 4 MM. The Brewers are also confirmed to have made an offer today for Hoffman. Hoffman would step in and be the ninth inning guy for either team.
  • Now that the Cubs have moved Jason Marquis’ salary, will they try to revitalize the Peavy talks? They did get back 3 pitching prospects for Mark DeRosa that they can toss into the trade to add in with possibly someone like Felix Pie or Josh Vitters. They are going through a possible ownership change, but the current ownership may be around long enough to pull off the trade. The Cubs are said to want one more pitching addition.
  • Now that the Orioles have signed another pitcher, their main want is now a catcher, or else they will have to go with rookie Matt Wieters on opening day. They are interested in Ivan Rodriguez or Gregg Zaun. Pudge would be a perfect fit as he could help Wieters develop. Zaun has also recieved interest from the Red Sox.
  • The Dodgers back up plan to Manny Ramirez is Adam Dunn. They will not pursue him until the Manny fracas is over however. Dunn may be more interested in a 1 year deal, as he would be a top free agent hitting option next year in a weaker class.
  • The Mets have made an offer to Tim Redding. They are also likely to send an offer to Randy Wolf in the next coming days as well. They do not want to increase their offer on Derek Lowe.
  • The Reds signed Jerry Hairston Jr to a contract for 2MM. He will likely start now that Alex Gonzalez may not be ready for the 2009 season.
  • If the Dodgers release CF Andruw Jones, the Braves are likely to sign him. They are also in the lead for Japanese pitcher Kenshin Kawakami, although the Orioles are also in the mix for him.
