MLB Report 5/7

Published by thetradersarena at 9:16 am under MLB Talks Edit This

News from around the league…

  • Johan Santana pitched beautifully last night going 7 innings, striking out 10 and giving up no runs to lower his ERA to 0.91. He was about to leave the game 0-0 but in the 7th, a broken bat hit by Fernando Tatis turned into a big throwing error allowing Carlos Delgado to score all the way from first. This is all the offense that was in the game. KRod came in and got the save in the 9th. Johan is now 4-1 with a 0.91 ERA and I would say leading candidate for CY Young at the moment. He has just been lights out.
  • The Dodgers set the MLB record for home wins with 13 straight to start a season. They beat the Nationals after scoring 7 in the 6th inning to win 10-3. They should easily run away with the division.
  • The Yankees lost another game last night after coming close again. They were down all game, and in the 8th, Mark Teixeira hit a bases clearing 3 run double to tie the game 3-3. The game was then put in delay for 30 minutes. Mariano Rivera came in and was lights out, I do not know why they did not throw him in the 10th but they brought in Phil Coke. What does he do? 2nd pitch HR to Carlos Pena, game over. Damon hit a ground rule double and went to third on a passed ball but Tex and Matsui couldn’t score him from 3rd with 1 and 2 outs respectively. Pena leads the league with 12 home runs.
  • Roy Halladay is trying to run with Zack Grienke for the AL CY Young winning his 6th game last night for the surprising Jays. Halladay went 8 innings giving up 6 hits and only 1 run. His ERA is 3.29 compared to Grienke’s .40 but you can’t expect that to last, but I can expect Halladay to last.
  • Paul Janish, the Reds Shortstop got the call to the bullpen last night due to a taxed bullpen and they were down 10-3 in the 9th. Janish used to be the closer for Rice University throwing 91 mph, but he gave up 5 runs but struck out 2.
  • Ryan Zimmerman increased his hit streak to 24 last night. He’s nearly halfway to 56!
  • The Rangers have overtaken the Mariners for first place in the West. The Angels are all injured but may make a run back expecting John Lackey back next week.
  • Randy Johnson was not successful in winning his 298th game giving up 7 runs in less than 6 innings. On the other side of the mound was Ubaldo Jimenez, who threw great, going 7 innings and only allowing 1 run.
  • The Mets will indeed place Oliver Perez on the DL and call up Jon Niese. Perez was supposed to go to the bullpen but now is going on the DL. One has to wonder if this is a BS injury just to not send him down and gain another 25 man roster player.
